THESE STUDIES WERE COMPLETED IN 1964 .(There have been at least two major studies since then that came to the same conclusion using more advanced methods including computer analysis .)
Speaking in tongues known in psychological jargon as glossolalia is an ancient practice, mentioned in the New Testament (Acts 2:1-4), and recurring in Christian revivals through the ages. Modern analysis, however shows that it is actually "linguistic nonsense." A professor of anthropology and linguistics at the University of Toronto, William T. Samarin, conducted an exhaustive five-year study of the phenomenon on several continents and concluded:
Glossolalia consists of strings of meaningless syllables made up of sounds taken from those familiar to the speaker and put together more or less haphazardly. The speaker controls the rhythm, volume, speed and inflection of his speech so that the sounds emerge as pseudolanguage in the form of words and sentences.
Glossolalia is language-like because the speaker unconsciously wants it to be language-like. Yet in spite of superficial similarities, glossolalia fundamentally is not language.
Samarin also noted that according to more than half of the glossolalists he studied, it was easier to speak in tongues than in ordinary language. "You don't have to think just let the words flow. One minister said he could 'go on forever: it's just like drumming.'"

Maurice . If I saw a person speaking in tongues I could pretty much understand that they were praying and meaning Praise the Lord , etc. Just as I can figure out that certain sounds "mean" I've been hit by a dammed car ! But there is nothing supernatural or proving in God , Jesus or Religion in this practice of Speaking in Tounges . In fact my wife and I can communicate in a limited language because we are familiar with each other . Nothing supernatual about it !

what you call speaking in tongues is a sign of illness.... they spout jibberish... they don't have any idea what they are talking about... it's not like they suddenly can talk french or spanish... any intelligible language.... I also seen people having epileptic seizures and a preacher claiming they are receiving a healing....

If you say the bible is truth and a couple of thousands of years old... explain why the church condemned the people who proclaimed the world is round to death, because the all knowing church insisted the world was flat...

and explain why these people serving a so called all knowing god also condemned people for studying the natural law of gravity as devil worshipers, or deceived by the devil's tricks... and some people might think that this are old examples but it's exactly the same behavior going on today while we study and learn the natural law of evolution... Christians only claim to be all knowing, this will be a thrird obvious wrong, for evolution is a certain as gravity... there are so many more laws of nature and the christians are set to argue against every one of them... When will christians admit to being deceived.... the bible is not there to guide but enslave... that is why those of us who just read it, see it more clearly than those who study and live by it....

"f the bible is a load of bull then hou do you explain thousands of people every day speaking in tounges?"

Such as your spelling?

If we assume that speaking in tongues means speaking a language, we can ascribe it certain characteristics: syntax, grammar, reproducible vocabulary. Language is an intrinsic part of our species. There are ways to define it.

Speaking in tongues as it occurs in churches has no qualities of a language, and resembles the miming of toddlers. It is literally "baby speak," and contains no elements of a language. Before you chalk this up to "faith" and say that it's impossible for us non-believers to understand it, perhaps you should analyze it yourself, without emotional bias. Do they repeat long words, or just random monosyllables that sound similar on the tongue and can be reproduced by anyone without particular effort? Do they have grammar, words, reproducible qualities that can be verified to be a language?

Until you are willing to analyze your own faith, there is no argument I can provide that will change your point of view. So let's agree to live and let live, alright? And fix that atrocious spelling -- this is a country of learning.

Cheers, kid.

You're not gonna get a good answer to this.

Som years ago my dad and some of his christian friends were praying and my dad was speaking in tounges and aparently there was someone around,a man I think, that understood what my dad was praying and saying. My dad didnt previously know the language, but aparently He was speaking it or the man wouldnt have been able to confirm what He was saying.

So all the atheist saying it's gibberish have no idea what their talking about cause they look through a glass darkly and have not sufficient understanding to really scrutinize what is real and what is fake.

Schizophrenics speak in tongues all the time.

Also, keep in mind that the "tongue speaking" typically appears to be reorganizations of phonemes from the main language of the person exhibiting the glossolalia. For example, a person speaking in tongues from France, will exhibit French phonetics.

EDIT: cataliz, thanks for reminding me why theists believe what they do - Fear of punishment and the self-important vanity of attaining some sort of afterlife .

EDIT: "i challenge anybody to give me a good logical answer besides that its all made up gibberish."

According to Dr. William T. Samarin, professor of anthropology and linguistics at the University of Toronto,

"Glossolalia consists of strings of meaningless syllables made up of sounds taken from those familiar to the speaker and put together more or less haphazardly .... Glossolalia is language-like because the speaker unconsciously wants it to be language-like. Yet in spite of superficial similarities, glossolalia fundamentally is not language"

Like I said, glossolalia, when seen in schizophrenics or psychotics is correctly written off as unintelligible gibberish - even by those of faith. Yet, when Pentocostals 'speak in tongues' people assume that god is speaking through them. There is no difference between the glossolalia that is seen in psychotics compared to the glossolalia that exists in the religious community.

As I have pointed out, speaking in tongues is not speaking in a language unknown to the speaker - it is simply the utterances of repetitive, disjointed phonemes of the speakers native language.

Furthermore, church communities that condone and support glossolalic tendencies always develop a sort of 'dialect' for that community. For instance, one denominations 'tongue-speaking' dialect will differ from another denominations. According to many churches, the gibberish can be interpreted by those of strong faith. However, as Nicholas Spanas points out, it is interesting to note that "typically, the interpretation supports the central tenets of the religious community". In short, the translators 'interpretation' is always in agreement with that particular churches dogmatic tenets. What more evidence does one need that glossolalia is not the voice of god. Unless, of course, each denomination is following a different god...

According to the scriptural verses that purportedly support glossolalia, the person speaking in tongues must be able to communicate with people who speak a foreign language. In Acts, speaking in tongues is supposed to be a method of communicating with people who do not speak the same language as you.

"every man heard them speak in his own language"

-ACTS 2;6

Essentially, glossolalia, as defined in the bible, is supposed to be a universal language. A language that can be understood by everyone. The speaker should be able to communicate with Russians, Chinese, Japanese, French, Ashanti, English, Spaniards, Italians etc at the same time and everyone will understand what the speaker is saying. Glossolalia, when defined in this way - the way the bible defines it - is never seen.

I challenge YOU to provide me of a case where this is so... Until then, stop believing everything your pastor tells you and try using some independent thinking. After all, the church has been wrong about a lot of things in the past. Heliocentrism not being the only thing. Perhaps they're wrong about this also....

Show me one person in modern times who speaks an intelligible language they could not reasonably other wise know, and we'll talk.

If it's a "spirit language," that is, one that has no Earthly equivalent, I won't buy it. Biblically, Tongues always referred to the speaker being understood by everyone, no matter the listener's native tongue.

It never, EVER, in the Bible refers to random clicks and mutters and sounds.

OK ask yourself this....
God wants to get a message to people. To do this he picks one person to convey the message but he has them communicate it in a language no one understands. Now how much sense does that make? None, I agree. The entire of idea of speaking in tongues ridiculous.

I don't need to explain people speaking in tongues, it simply does not follow from people speaking in tongues that the content of the bible is true.
