i recommend seeing a psychiatrist and getting their opinion.. they may be able to suggest medications if needed or alternatives to medications if your would like.. and talk therapy is very beneficial.. the best thing about a therapist is that they don't know you.. therefore they don't have any personal opinions towards you.. so you get honest, unbiased help..
the best depression/anxiety reliever i can recommend is exercise.. (sorry you said besides this, but it honestly is one of the best ways) it takes your focus off what's bothering you and hey it's just good in general.. exercise also releases serotonin, dopamine and a few other nuerotransmitters in your brain.. serotonin helps you sleep and dopamine is related to pleasure and happiness.. those chemicals i just mentioned are the ones that your brain lacks when depressed.. exercise helps to balance them.. this has been clinically proven to work faster and longer than medication.. simply taking a twenty minute walk each day could really help..
exercise also releases endorphins.. the body's natural pain killers.. this is related to "runner's high"..
other than exercise you could try deep breathing, muscle relaxation techniques, meditation, yoga, listening to music, writing in a journal, or talking to a friend about it.. i also drink ungodly amounts of tea.. haha..
get a good social support network.. talk to a friend or family member about how you feel..
take time out for yourself each day.. to just reflect, relax, and settle your thoughts.. do things that relax you and that you enjoy..
warm milk also helps to produce serotonin.. so maybe drinking a glass before you go to sleep may help..
try to get at least an hour of sunlight each day.. this also helps to balance your brain chemistry and produces serotonin..
eat a healthy diet.. and drink lots of water..
when you feel yourself getting anxious just stop and concentrate on your breathing.. keep a steady inhale and exhale going until you feel your heart rate decreasing..
just try to make the best of things.. it may be hard, but it's essential to survive..
i really hope this helps.. and best of luck

Stop whatever is causing the stress! Exercise, take nice baths with lavender oil before bed, at least an hour before bed don't have TV, computer or any other distraction on, get a hobby, eat healthy and do what you can to get rest and sleep. Cat naps for 20 minutes are great during the lunch hour to refresh you.

Talk to someone you trust, engage in positive hobbies, avoid excessive alcohol, find ways of litterally reducing stress through better time management and avoiding stressful situations if possible. Get plenty of sleep and eat right - thats pretty big actually. Comedy - I always recommend getting in touch with your sense of humor, it works wonders to know how to laugh. You can also learn to meditate, practice martial arts or just physical activity in general. Spirituality is a good place to find ease. Sometimes I like to just have a nice hot bath with a cold beer. Regular sexual activity helps me out. Don't be afraid to spoil yourself every now and again too.

Go see a doctor and a therapist, it seems its a bit more than stress...seriously. Or maybe its just the midage pains?
I think taking a good bath then relaxing to some music, books or a tv show can help. Leaning against a shoulder of someone who cares about you can help also.

Ugh! I know what you mean! Meditation helps...If you don't know how, learn from a class! Really, it helped me.
That, and an occasional xanax! :)
