One basis of the Lutheran Church is "It is by grace we are saved through faith" That faith is faith in Jesus Christ and the salvation He won for us when He sacrificed Himself on the cross for the forgiveness of sin. See Ephesians 2:2-17...this pretty well tells the story of much of the Lutheran faith. Martin Luther was a Catholic Monk BUT he refuted the Catholic Church and displayed errors the (at that time, VERY powerful) Catholic Church taught. Luther is the main person of the Reformation. His debunking of the Catholic Church is one of the main starting points for almost all Christian faiths. Lutherans do NOT worship Luther, they simply adhere to his ideas. Lutherans believe in the trinity God=Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Lutherans have great regard for baptism and communion. The Lutheran faith is a Bible based faith.

Lutherans believe the do not require intersession of a priest as a father figure over their spiritual self, also do not have allegiance to a pope overlord mentality as a political and spiritual all knowing position....but the individual is capable of a true relationship with Jesus Christ to God the host of hosts
also prior to Lutheranism..individuals were not so often having the opportunity to read as the priest alone were having availability to the scripture and for an individual to reason that they had availability to the truth of scripture was at that time a heresy punishable by excommunication and persecution from the strong hold of the catholic Chucho over all aspects of life
so you could say separatist reformers are Lutherans in their day,

I was raised Lutheran, and I learned some good truths from them, but I am not a Lutheran anymore. They believe that if babies would die before they were baptized, that they would go to hell. They also believe in the Bible, but they misinterpret many doctrines. They believe in the grace of God, which is good. I was taught as long as I ask God to forgive me before I die, then He would, but I do not recommend this. I believe that we should get straight with God while we can. There are some Born Again Lutherans and many may not even know it, but many only go to Church as a tradition or an obligation. Now that I have a relationship with God as my Father, I find it too dead and boring for me.

Lutheran faith reflects the reformation set in motion by Martin Luther who rejected many of the practices of the Catholic church in his day. He realized that no matter how hard we try, we cannot ever "earn" our salvation by 'being' good' or doing nice things. This concept is called grace and is the core of the Lutheran tradition. God loves us because he loves us, not because we are worthy of his love. Just like a parent loves their child even when the child does not deserve it or misbehaves.

There are different types of Lutheran traditions today. They are referred to as 'synods.' Some are more strict. Others are very liberal. I am most familiar with Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. www.elca.org
There will be a section where you can check out the beliefs more in depth.

The quick and to the point answer...

That salvation is a gift from God, freely given, and that we cannot do anything to earn our way to Heaven. Jesus died on the cross to take away our sins - we don't deserve salvation, but it is a free gift of God = Grace alone, Faith alone, Scripture alone.

we believe in God. we were origionaly part of the roman catholic church, but broke away when Martin Luther nailed the 95 thesis on the church door. we are "like" the catholics, except we only have 3 sacraments, Baptism, Communion, and Matromony. catholics have 7. the lutheran church is like any other christian community, but you will find that in most lutheran churches, they are very conservitive, and sing traditional church hymns.

i would be able to give you more information, if i had my catism infront of me. if you have any other questions, just e-mail me.

The Lutheran church is a lot like the Catholic church, they just do not pray to the Mother Mary, nor do they say rosaries, or let only the priest drink the wine during communion....Martin Luther was of the catholic church...
