Does the anonymous nature of the internet allow for greater cruelty toward one another, or is everyone like this in real life?

When I was new to this forum, I probably would have said 'yes'. But after some of the stuff I've read here, I can't honestly say that. I'd like to, but I can't....

Everyone here would like to believe that how they are on the internet is how they are in real life. Give me a break. Of course we're not like this in real life. That's the great thing about the anonymous nature of the internet.
The only thing that appalls me is the level of intolerance I find with the people in R&S.

Most people would be a little nicer in person. Some people might be treated worse based on their appearance or age, but for the most part people would be civil toward one another.

It's a challenge being kind to people on the internet because we're dealing with controversial ideas and these discussions would get heated no matter who had them or where.

If you need to ask this question then you need to spend more time away from your computer. Your answer is in the question - The anonymity of the internet affords people the luxury of being assholes. People are generally a lot nicer in real life. Try it!

That is highly likely. People are much nicer face to face.
It is a shame we don't realize that the person on the other end of that font is just as real as the face we see in the mirror.

God bless all who do.

I have seen a commercial on TV recently that has a girl really saying awful things to another girl - to her face! Then they say "if you wouldn't say it to some one face to face, don't post it on the Internet." We should all take that to heart. I've had a supposed Christian brother tell me I don't know God and another non-Christian imply I am lying about my academic credentials.(all this on R & S) My teenage daughter thinks I am taking this stuff too personal and has suggested she "ground" me from Y!A. So how about we all grow up a bit and try to be nicer, at least for the holiday season??!!??

PS: my church has great potlucks - we specialize in eating meetings!

If I met the person who kept asking the same question 48302 times, I'd probably be the same, directly honest person I am online. :)

But hey, I guess I'm an overall, nice person. Religion is a very touchy subject, and I'm sure that if I got to know the person outside of religion, they'd be wonderful.

A: whats R&S... B: Yes speaking our minds is so much easier when the delete button can rid any opinions we dont like . In real life we risk confrontation when being honest or just rude. People in general try to avoid confrontation face to face . Its not politicaly correct

I'm not nasty on the Internet. Once in a while I have an edge to my posts. And yes, any time I mock someone or attack them, it's because I'm not afraid to. I wouldn't be in real life, either.

I am pretty close to this in real life.

The internet does allow for more "cruelty" but people CHOOSE to come, they CHOOSE to READ the criticism and demeaning statements. They can't complain, because they CHOOSE to see them.
