I know you said no old geezers and all, but I went to Ft. Jackson back in '05. When I went through, there were people that brought their cell phones with them even though we were told not to. Back then, you weren't allowed to keep them, but the drill sergeants kept them locked up for you. As we moved on into AIT, we were able to earn them back. It is possible that you are allowed to have them during BCT now, but either way, it's just 9 weeks until you get them back. You might as well take it either way.

I just got out of training this year. We took our cell phones and were able to use them for our specified amount of phone time on sundays. During red phase, it was only 10 minutes. During white, 20, and sometimes during blue phase we would have them 2-3 hours!
But that was my training unit. Every unit has different regulations. I know some units that required everyone to use the payphones. Just bring it. If nothing else, you have it on family day. You won't know if you can use it until you get there.
But don't be stupid and try to sneak it in (someone will!!). You are so busy that you wont have time to use it anyway.

Take it with you, but turn it off and don't try to hide it, they will tell you when you can use it and what to do with it. You will probably have to turn it and all your MP3 players and other distracting valuables into supply for safe keeping until the DI says otherwise. After you prove yourself worthy, they may let you start using it. (Usually about 6 weeks in) Don't forget the charger, and don't try to hide it. If caught, they have a bad habit of not working anymore.
One more piece of advice. Be a professional soldier when it comes to carrying a cell phone. Keep it on Vibrate, no silly ringtones. They have the bad habit of going off at the worst moments. Keep them hidden, they are not part of your uniform, and should not be worn as such. Fortunately, the new ACU uniform has lots of small pockets just right for cell phones.
The simple fact is, they come in handy, even in basic training. I've seen DI's co-ordinate all sort of training on their cell phones. And if someone gets hurt in training, 911 works on most Army post.

You can but it will be taken by your Drill SGT, they will return it 2 days before you graduate, in AIT you are allowed to have your cell, you can only use it during personal time and you may not carry it on you any other time ie class, formation.
I went to BCT in 06 at Ft.Jackson

all cell phones will be either sent back to the address on record or locked up until just before graduation. don't even THINK about trying to sneak one in. Unless you love push ups. a lot.

You can bring it, but you will not get to use it until graduation day. That's the reality of it. Also, I strongly suggest you bring the very bare minimum in terms of clothing; it will sit in your suitcase either inside a locked room in the barracks or in a huge bin outside and you will not see this stuff until maybe a couple of days before you graduate.
So bring one, maybe two changes of clothing and undergarments, a towel, a personal hygiene kit and everything else will be issued to you; uniforms, underwear, glasses (if you wear them), etc...
Trust me, afer the 2 (and a half) months in basic, your stored clothes will stink and will not fit you (an average soldier will lose an avereage of 10 pounds during basic training).
So in short, don't bring your cellphone, laptop, iPod, radio or anything electronic, because you will not be allowed to use it.

when i was there in 06 you couldn't use them
i don't know about now, but i don't see why they would let you
you can go ahead and try, but they will take it away and if you try to keep it i guarantee one of the DSs will take it and "corrective train" the sh+t out of you.
