My brother-in-law smokes inside his closed room and the smell spreads to the living room and in the hallway. My one year old is just learning how to walk and his play pen is located in the living room. I'm worried that the strong odor might affect my son.

You're worried about odor? But not carcinogens?

No you were not wrong at all. Even though your daughter isn't a newborn any longer, her little lungs still have not fully developed and how can they say that chemicals from tar to nicotine to benzine (yup, even benzine appears in cig smoke) don't do any harm. People are all different. Some babies and children are seriously affected by the smoke. Others don't show any sign of it until they're 15 or so and they're diagnosed with asthma, or worse. Children exposed to cigarette smoke are at best more susceptible to coughs and chest infections. At worst, they are diagnosed with a form of cancer, or have asthma. Tell these inconsiderate, ignorant people that 1. You don't care if it didn't seem to affect their children. What you want for YOUR child is YOUR choice. 2. If they don't like it they know where the door is. I'd also suggest googling cigarette smoke contents, and once you get the results there should be a breakdown of all the possible effects on people, whether children or adults.

Children who are exposed to second hand smoke have a higher risk of developing asthma than those with no smoke exposure. Of course second hand smoke is also a risk factor for developing lung cancer later on in life. You should tell your brother in law to smoke outside so that your child's health is not affected. Good luck! and try to encourage him to stop smoking there are many options including nicotine patches, gum and medications such as Chantix and buproprion.

I think you should be more worried about what your son is breathing in rather than the smell of the cigarette
