Sure there are a lot of wacky fundamentalists who give the religion a bad name, but they are no worse than fundamentalists of any religion and they are a very small minority. For the most part we are moral, law abiding citizens who don't look to push our religion on anybody else. If the religion really helps us as people, then why do you feel it neccessary to prove that it false?

I believe people are confused about the context in which I used the word "really". I meant what is the true, real reason. And to the person that suggested that Christianity plays a role in determining laws in the western world, I have to completely disagree. I'll give you a list of examples if you want.

Fundamentalism is not only an ideology that Christians have the market on, there are fundamental atheists around. I don't go around ramming my beliefs down their throat, I just wish they would do the same and not chastise me every time I make a statement about my beliefs.

Christians try to change laws in many parts of the Western World and are more successful than any other religion by far. That's why.
"really helps us as people"
Arguable.
Sure, give me a list of examples. I didn't say that Western law is dictated by Christianity, just that Christianity is the most vocal religion out there and the one most likely to dictate the way a country is run. The United States is a prime example.
"they want to be able to do whatever they want to do without having to think about being judged."
The Christians did a better job of answering your question than I did- that quote there, mate, is why.

There isn't any one main reason. Some have been hurt by religion and are retaliating. Others have misplaced anger and attack religion because aspects of it are easy to make fun of. Others haven't been exposed to intelligent theology (I imagine most Atheists reading this scoff at such a notion), and therefore, rightly reject the poorer theologies they've been exposed to. Others merely grew up surrounded by non-believers and lack much personal exposure to Theism. Still others see the terrible things that have been done in the name of God and think the world would be a better place without religion.
Although most Atheists say they don't follow religion because it doesn't make intellectual sense to them, there is usually some degree of subjective reason involved too.

I don't care if religion helps people for the moment, because religions aren't eradicated in a day, so it is not our concern, for the moment. Our concern is with the fundamentalists, and, conveniently enough, their basis in the religion is actually spot on. Everyone else is slightly detached from the religion to some degree, and thus, are able to function as human beings, able to restrain their homophobia, able to not shout out something about baby killing, able to see that Creationism in schools is a bad idea. We are after the people who cannot, and our target happens to be the holy little book that they base their intolerance on. If anyone is hurt in the process, I apologize. But, seriously, some people just need to realize what reality is, and be weaned off of faith.

Christians fundamentalists generally aren't militant, at least not in the US, but they are imposing their views onto the laws

I think Atheists despise Christianity because they don't want to be held accountable by a Creator, they want to be able to do whatever they want to do without having to think about being judged.

They most likely were betrayed by Christianity and cant get over it because the Jesus is still in their brainwashed minds and they still cant figure out what hit them and why they could not find the truth but there is hope for all in The Age Of Reason.
