Emigration doesn't depend on money, but on you getting a valid permit (visa) to live in Thailand for an extended period of time (i.e., not a tourist visa).

There are certain requirements that you need to meet and they vary depending on which visa you want to apply for.

I'd definitely not recommend you move anywhere with a nest egg that small unless you also have a stable source of income.

Emigrate To Thailand

I lived in Thailand for 5months last year, you can buy a new two bedroom bungalow for about £10,000.

So £18,000 is certainly enough capital, but when I considered emigrating there, I found I needed a minimum income of £12,000 per annum as well as the capital.

You will live very well on that sort of income, check with the Thai embassy in whichever country you are living in at present.

The only reason I came back, was that my drink problem got worse because I could not work there as a non-resident.

I think emigrating to Thailand is about more than just money.

You'll have to look on immigration website.
Talk to the thai consulate. If one even exists.

For a backpacker - you can live pretty comfortably on £600 a month.

Here's a site.
I haven't looked at it, but i can see a thailand subsection

£18000 will last you years.

It depends on how old you are. If you are over 50 years then you could apply for a retirement visa. The procedures are listed here:

http://www.siam-legal.com/Thailand_Service/thailand-retirement.php

You would need to be in Thailand for more than 3 years in order to file for a residency permit. Starting on a retirement visa might be the easiest option.

If you are not over 50 years of age but married to a Thai citizen you could apply for a 1 year "O" visa. Do this for 3 consecutive years and then apply for a residency permit. Procedures are here:

http://www.siam-legal.com/Thailand_Service/thailand-one-year-visa.php

If you are not over 50 years of age and not married to a Thai, you might consider working in Thailand, obtain your work permit and after 3 years apply for a residency permit.

It is up to you!

Check with the embassy in your country as to how you can do so. You need to maintain a bank deposit amount and show you have an income of a certain level. If you are seriously thinking of doing so, check their terms for working or retiring there.
