There were 13 apostles appointed by God. The original 12, then Christ appointed Paul as the last after he saw Him on the road. The original 12 also appointed another apostle, but other than his name in the book of Acts, nothing else is mentioned about him. God told Peter to wait, but poor Peter alas did not listen.
The apostles were appointed to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ and in order to give authority to their words, Christ gave them particular spiritual gifts, like the ability to heal the sick and raise the dead and cast out demons.
No, I do not believe that there are apostles living today among us. Why would we need them? The evidence and foundation for the faith was already laid down by the original 12. Christ said it is a wicked and adulterous generation that seeks after signs and wonders. He also said blessed are those who believe and have NOT seen.
And lastly, most of the people nowadays who are claiming to be true apostles of God are generally trying to change the Word of God somehow, which the Bible itself said would never happen with a true apostle.
Great question, thanks for asking it and God bless you.

Where do you get the idea that an Apostle had to see the risen Lord? The word itself was coined by Paul, who used it to describe all kinds of people. He told the entire community at Rome that they were Apostles. The modern use of the word as a term for those who had seen the risen Christ is a relatively new development.

There were only 12 original apostles who are spoken about in the bible.
Simon.

Andrew.

Andrew.

James.

John.

Philip.

Bartholomew.

Thomas.

Matthew.

James.

Thaddaeus.

Simon the Zealot.

Judas Iscariot.

Matthias. (To bring the number back up to twelve after Judas fell away)

If you are talking about an apostle as someone who speaks Gods word there would be millions.

Jesus stated to his disciples to go out and make disciples of them teaching them all the things i have taught you! This shows to go out and make disciples of others, there is a difference between a disciple and Christians, disciples make other foot step followers that will go out and do the work so it carries on! The Christians of today do nothing as to teach, they just sit there. some go out but not many.
