Hello,
My fiancee is moving in to australia with me and before that i bought her some santhal wood carved statues for our previous holidays in the islands close to where she lives that I'd like her to bring with her so we can decorate the house.
I don't know if australian custom allows it in the country?
Thanks you for your help :)

I've brought in plenty of wooden items, and never had a problem. I always declare that I have food/wood et al. And I always pack these items at the top of my suitcase. Then when Customs goes to check them, they don't have to dig around my dirty laundry, the items are right on top, waiting to be checked. I brought in wooden playing cards from Viet Nam last September, which had bone faceplates. They weren't a problem. I've brought in wooden hair clips, bowls, knick knacks... declared them every time; and never had a problem. My brother even brought in a wooden Barong from Bali, without Customs batting an eyelid. Usually, lacquered/varnished/polished wood gets passed. Raw wood tends to be more of the problem. Just declare them. You won't have any problems. And even if something is dodgy, you will get it back once it's been treated.

Unfortunately this is exactly the sort of thing that quarantine is looking for. But it still might be OK. Contact them by email and ask, giving details of the exact type of wood and where you bought the carvings. The site that ian gave the URL for should be a good place to start.

Mate, you can take them but they will be sprayed at your cost, i have seen this many times on a series called border security here in oz. i would call first, do not try to deceive the customs officials, we have reasons why we dont want wood in, our fauna and flora are at risk from mites and the like, do the right thing and they will let you bring them in, if you get the treated.

It isn't customs, it is the quarantine service that prevents you bringing wooden articles into Australia. Ian's link will tell you all about it.
