A Mossberg 500 Cruiser. They run about $300, but can be found cheaper than that. It's definitely not a hunting shotgun.

Get a 20 or 410 gauge Mossberg. Tough as nails. There is no need for a huge 12 gauge shotgun for home defense. If it is legal in your state, you may want a folding stock.

Below is a link to the Mossberg that is the 20 or 410's built for home defense. Use the arrow keys to see the different models. Yes the 410 is the smallest shotgun, but if you load it with buckshot, you still get three 00 pellets at 1400fps or a large slug. Very easy to shoot. Some people cannot handle the 12.

Anyone that thinks that the 410 cannot kill a man, stand in front of one loaded with buckshot. I would still prefer the 20 gauge, but if someone is really small or recoil sensitive, a 410 will work.

Doc...they said small. There is no such thing as a small 12. And not everyone can handle the mighty 12 gauge. Just like everyone cannot handle a 357.

Well if you wanted to bother with it, you can legally aquire a pump shotgun, 12 gauge, with a 10 inch barrel, but that requires you to go through a $200 dollar, 4 month backround check, and than about 1000 for the gun itself

if you wanted to buy something now, you can get a mossberg 500 with an 18.5" barrel, that would be well suited to home protection, they run around $300, well worth it and it would suit you fine

Mossberg 500 6-shot, 18 1/2" barrel, pistol grips. Load 2 3/4" #1 buckshot. Do NOT try to aim a pistol-gripped shotgun in the conventional manner sighting down the barrel, or you will end up with a face-full of knuckles.

Go for a Remington 870 Express. Then, if legal in your area, get the pistol grip attachment and the shortest barrel you can. 3" 000 Buck will stop anything you need to be worried about.

For home protection buy a Remington 870 Express Marine Magnum. they run about 300 bucks, holds 8 rounds ( regular, less if magnum rounds ) and are super easy to navigate and familiarize yourself with.

for self protection while abroad you can get various revolvers chambered for the .410 . ive seen over/under derringers chambered for .410 and .45 Long colt. ( .410 to blind the person, .45 to lay them out )

if your going to get a gun, get a .44 magnum revolver. you can hunt with it, carry it, and load it with Glaser Rounds for home protection. ( they wont go through a wall and kill all your neighbors )

Mossberg M-500 in 12 gauge.

The Persuader / Cruiser version has an 18.5 inch barrel, and can be fitted with a pistol grip stock in stead of a shoulder stock.

I ended up the same way - flat on the ground. My dad had a fiercesome rifle (300 Savage) - I shall never forget its name. I was a slight weight child at 12 - with no experience in a thing called "recoil". My sighting was good - I hit what I aimed for - but the shot itself - put my back to the "floor" - and boy, was my shoulder sore - never wanted to shoot that rifle - nevermore! ♥
