Get a book that helps you learn basics like playing things on 1 string the 2 then 3 etc..
it also has to teach you chords and power chords
your local music shop will have them...and then once you can play around the fretboard you can get an electric and focus on a style of playing

If you are just starting out remember this and etch it in your soul PATIENCE is the most valuable thing you will ever learn when it comes to guitar. I speak from experience and have played now for over 20 years. Second nevar stop learning. I learn something new every time I pick mine up.

For what? The guitar itself or learning how to play? It takes a long time you just need to find a place to start your knowledge at, and I would say power chords is a place to start, and few basic chords, and work on changing them after you get the gist of up and down strumming, palm muting, etc...

It doesn't make any difference if you have an electric, or an acoustic. Condition your fingers, learn some chords, and practice. If you have a specific question, email me.

Spend the money and take some lessons from a reputable teacher. There. That's the best advice you are going to get online.

Run a pick up and down across the strings. Just play around with it. Is that the sort of help you need?
