Apostle Jeff and Sioux have given you good answers
Someone can pray with you to receive the gift of tongues ~ nothing to be scared of at all.
When my friend prayed with me, i actually had the same experience hundreds of believers had at Pentecost ~ spoken of in Acts 2 ~ but i was a little apprehensive about speaking in tongues ~ but the next day it just came pouring out ~ awesome experience...
It's actually a sign given by God when a believer is baptised in the Holy Ghost/Spirit ~ it's the empowerment spoken of in Acts ch2 ~ well worth a read.
Blessings : )

Added: It's a heavenly language ~ speaking to God ~~ and there's a word in tongues, where someone translates what's been said.
Don't let anyone put you off ~ if you want to understand it, just ask The Lord God ~ He will show you everything you need to know...
Too many ppl get hung up on getting it right , and God's order ~ it's a personal walk, and personal experience ~ if you know your Lord ~ there's nothing to be concerned about ~ don't let anyone rob you of something wonderful God wants to give you....

It was a biblical gift where a preacher was able to speak and people of all national origins were able to understand. Some people of charismatic faiths say it's the language of Angels and they feel "moved" to speak it as if it's some kind of message. The Bible is vague on whether or not the gift is still around, but it's very clear that a person speaking tongues will always be translated by someone else in attendance.

There are 2 kinds of tongues...
its in the bible....
They are both gifts of truly being baptized
in Gods Holy Spirit.
Some speak in other languages known to some
and some speak as angels in a unknown
tongue that only God would understand.
It is a true miracle.

Justin alluded to what I believe is the truth. Speking or being understood in an actual language that is unknown to the speaker. So much of what passes for "tongues" today is simple gibberish, The Bible clearly states protocol for speaking in tongues.

It is a gift from the Holy Ghost. The Bible says that when we speak in an unknown tongue, we are not speaking to men, but to God. It also says that when we pray in tongues, that it is the Holy Spirit praying for what we ought. I thank my God for this supernatural gift because it as given me supernatural powers. If you want more info, read 1 Cor. 14.

The truth is that most of the "speaking in tongues" (etc.) being done in churches that emphasize repeated and continual baptism by the "holy spirit" is actually devil worship. The confusion comes from one of the changes which has been introduced into the Bible as a result of the papal translators. Note in the following verses that the word "unknown" is not in the original manuscripts:

1Cor. 14:1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
1Cor. 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

What it is really saying is that if you speak in a foreign language which most (if not all) around you cannot understand, then you are only speaking to God and are not edifying, exhorting, or comforting your fellow brothers and sisters around you. Paul even says that the greater gift, than being able to speak in a foreign language, is the ability to prophesy.

1Cor. 14:3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
1Cor. 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
1Cor. 14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh, with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

Prophesying, in this context, is not talking about telling the future. It is talking about testifying for Jesus and speaking God's Word to your fellow brothers and sisters.

Paul also says that if everyone in the church is speaking in different foreign languages, then it is bedlam and a dishonor to God. Paul even tells those that speak in a foreign language to keep their peace in the church unless there is someone to interpret.

1Cor. 14:27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
1Cor. 14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

God bless.

on the day of Pentecost a sermon was given to many different language speaking people at one time, however each herd it in there own language.

so speaking in tongues is a language also in certain religions they believe that the holy spirit descends on them and they speak in a different language { but with a interpreter}so let the rest know what they are saying
