Green is for ordinary days, White is for High holy days like Easter. Red is for feasts of the persons of the Holy Trinity, and martyrs like Pentecost and the Feast of the Sacred Heart, Purple is for penitential days, like Advent and Lent.

There are two other colors too. Rose for Gaudete Sunday (3rd Sunday in Advent) and Laetare Sunday (4th Sunday in Lent), and black for Good Friday and funerals. They've backed off from the black for funerals and switched to purple.

Green stand for the 'ordinary' season of the church. Purple is often a sign of Royalty and is used during Advent and Lent. White is often a sign of purity and of the resurrection ...and Christ's birth. Liturgical colors....like red are for Pentecost and sybolyze the flame of the Holy Spirit.

These colours apply only within the western church.
Green symbolizes growth, white for purity & light,
red is for the blood of martyrs, or the fire of the Holy Spirit,
purple is for penance.
There are also violet, rose, & blue, for particular occasions.
