Sadly, 9 times out of 10, it isn't anything they have done. Usually, their home life when children was bad and they had to survive somehow. For that other portion, mental disorders can be passed along in families. Then there are those that wrecked their brains by doing drugs or alcohol.
Life is tough and as adults it can be difficult if we were never shown how to cope and came from difficult backgrounds. So, when a trauma occurs, it can trigger something and people become depressed or spiral down into mania or whatever.
We all experience something in the mental health area in one degree or another. No one escapes.

It's either due to family health history or trauma to the brain.
Your brain is a chemical factory. If something disturbs the process (genes/stress from the outside world) a hot wire could snap.
