The best $100 compact digital camera that runs on rechargeable batteries (250 shots or more on AAs) , shoots excellent quality video with sound and has a wonderful review at Steve's Digital.com: it's the 6-megapixel Nikon Coolpix L11 currently selling at samys.com.

If you can afford to spend about $300 more, go with the Canon PowerShot S3 with the image stabilized 12X zoom.

Good luck!

The digital camera that takes a really good photo is the one being used by someone who knows how to use it to its full potential. They have read and studied the Owner's Manual and know all the settings and how and when to use them. They may have taken a few classes in photography. IMO 95% of the questions asked in here and in the Photography section are asked because people simply don't know how to use their camera.

If you're really interested in photography you might consider a DSLR. Almost everyone suggests Canon or Nikon and they are fine cameras. I suggest taking a good look at the Pentax K100D. It has 6.1mp and Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body. Every K-mount lens made since 1975 (when Pentax introduced the K1000 with the K-mount) will mount to the K100D. Yes, they'll require manual focus but at least you'll have IS with them. With the introduction of the K100D Super and K10D the price of the K100D should be dropping.
