Biking is great for me! It's the only exercise I love doing and have stuck with for over 20 years. Besides the health aspects, it gets you places and allows you to interact with the environment. Great for body control and balance because you are always in control. I ride alongside a creek where I see all sorts of flora and fauna. Right now, I have some tadpoles and fish that I rescued from a disappearing stream and are now swimming in my backyard pond/tank. I love nature, I guess, and biking allows me to interact with it while getting a great aerobic workout. Try it, you'll like it! Oh, and I'd suggest a mountain bike if you'll be going off road.

Your question practically has one subjective answer, and another objective regarding with type you should get.
I think that fun depends on each person. I really love mountain biking, but every one has different tastes.
To me it is worth the money, but because I really like it and try to ride as much as possible, but probably for others it might be a lot of money. Biking is a hobby besides a sport, so you could do it cheap, or pretty expensive, depending on what bikes and other stuff you get. For some a 3,000 usd bike is a nice mid range bike, while for others 1,000 might mean spending too much money. It's just a question of finding a right bike that fits your body and your wallet.
The other answer is about which type of bike you should get. I would consider an all-mountain bike or a light freeride bike if you're considering jumping and stuff.

A bike ride can go many miles, over many hills. Climbing the hills can be grueling and strenuous. Coming down hills can be exciting.
Bicycling can take you over footpaths where it's too narrow for a car to go. Sometimes you come to a place and you say:"I don't thing anyone has been here in twenty years!" on account there are a few rusty beer cans on the ground, and you know beer hasn't been sold in steel cans for over twenty years (only aluminum).
Bicycling has been called the sport of the Elite. There are so few competitors.
I get a feeling of accomplishment from riding my bike. It takes someone else 150, 200, or 250 horsepower with a car, what I can do with my own legs!
Furthermore, only two percent of cyclists die of heart attacks. For non-bikers, the death rate from heart attack is 45%.

it is very fun and i do not know any other sport that generates so much sense of community. you will see bikers talking to each other while riding, helping each other, joking. that does not happen in any other sport.
give it a try. get a used giant, specialzied or trek bike on ebay for $200-300 and you will see. it will change your life
