Learn the licks of your favorite players. If you have trouble, invest in a guitar trainer, and electronic device that slows down the riff without altering it's pitch. them take individual parts and patch them together to create your own solos. then alter the timing of the riffs, throw in a different note here and there. Then just play man.

You need a starting point, and Hendrix, Clapton, Santana, Vai, Sariani, McLaughlin, and even Les Paul can provide that for you.

I'll bet your one who got that cool electric guitar and went for the chords and cool before you went for the "lets get a teacher and learn correctly, or a tutor from the Internet", am I right ??? I just told a guy this very thing....you didn't say how long that you've been playing or how old you are so it's hard to tell you exactly what I think....but when people get to the stage your at I always know that they number one didn't have a teacher, and two they just started playing chords and didn't bother to learn the basics, am I correct. Why don't you start over...start from the beginning, learn how to read music, and either get a teacher or start one of those excellent programs on the Internet. You'll probably pick it up quickly because you can already play...but believe me I've heard so many people tell me the same thing that your saying and I always know what the problem is, they skipped the basics, most of them can't even tell me what key their playing in. I've started many a person from the beginning and they do so much better when they feel more confident in what their doing....it's never to late to start from the beginning !!!!!!!!

It's hard to tell you what to do, since guitar style is such an individual thing (unless you play by numbers like so many bands today HA). The best advice I can give you is to just experiment and find unique sounds or not combinations that sounds good to you. Play in different places on the neck of the guitar, and even try messing arround with different string tunings. Good luck hope that helps, and remember be unique!

This year Wayne has hit his stride, releasing an almost unfathomable amount of music. It seems that every morning a new mixtape, freestyle, or feature has popped onto the Web, turning the mediocre meanderings of any number of artists into must-listens. Wayne does so easily, without ceremony over his craft or attitudinal tics - just a trust in his wildly malleable croak, a voice that has become unparalleled in recognizability, and an odd fascination with the absurd. Wayne calls himself an alien, raps in French, sings from his knees, plays guitar (badly), and records endlessly. Because he knows this is his moment. He is what he says he is: The Best Rapper Alive. Hear, hear! I plulled that out of an article last year, he uses it more as an image but actually has become pretty..."ok" with it

Try learning blues scales. There are plenty of DVD's on the subject. Take the first blues scale and lean it forward and backwards until you can play it without thinking. Pretty much all of your basic blues or rock lead rifts come from a few blues scales. Once you learn the scales you may just be able to improvise on your own. If not, the next step is to imitate other guitarists note for note then start to go off on your own. It worked for me. I love playing lead, now!

It is a key to escape your box!

I know exactly how you feel. I think its because you try to learn by yourself. Its better to take lessons where you have to have a lesson ready and play it for someone. Fastest way to learn and break into the next level.

A good ear helps also, but you can develop it with time. Some people are born with it.

first of all, if you are playing lead for yourself and not the song, BAD BAD BAD!!! Learn a few scales, practice them enough to memorize them, then play some rhythm to solo to(its good to record it too). remember lead licks are supposed to better the song, not your ego. just feel the music through you, because YOU are the instrument.

take a break, walk around, look at the scenery outside, breathe some air and relax. after a while go back and try again, it should work.

but if it still doesn't work, i usually just give up for the day and try again some other time.
