He did have children but none of them lived long enough to be his heir. The Shiites believe his son in law should be his successor and the Sunnis believe in a more democratic way of choosing his successor.

the difference between sunni and shia is this exact question. im not sure if he had any blood children however the Shia believe that the succession should have passed according to blood line beginning with his cousin and son in law, Ali. so yes there has been fighting over it and it hasnt stopped. its still going on.

however it was not about being the next prophet. mohammed is the only one muslims claim to be a prophet. the passing of leadership was the issue

Before you thumbs down and report Craig R's reply...do some research. his answer corellates with a number of accounts of the life of the Prophet, peace be upon him.

"[T]he Prophet (Muhammed) married her (Aisha) when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death)." (Hadith, Sahih Bukhari 7:62:64)

Craig R could have done with specifying a source to assist this understanding but don't jump the gun and assume his comment to be islamophobic.

to answer the question, yes, it's widely accepted that he did, and while they themselves may not have fought, many have since fought in the name of one or the other

prophet muhammad had 4 daughters: Zaynab, Ruqayah, Fatimah, and Om Kolthoom.

in the quran it says prophet muhammad is the last prophet so the idea of who should be the next prophet was never even entertained

for the first poster, i dont know where your lies came from, but muhhamed DID NOT marry a girl of six or nine. how would you like it if i said that about your prophet, of if you dont have one, every single person of your religion? saying that would be wrong and racist and stupid because i dont know your prophet or every single peson of your religion, or no-religion.. and nobody fought to be his succesor because, as belived in the koran, he was the last prophet because he fulfilled the job laid out for him by allah.

When you say "have any children" do you mean "have" as in he was their father, or "have" as in having sex with them? If the latter, the answer is yes. I think she was 6 when they were married and 9 when they consummated their relationship, though they had a physical relationship prior to that.
