I went to the Nissan dealer to find out how many quarts of ATF my 2005 Nissan Xterra takes. It's an automatic. They said 12 quarts which sounds like a lot. Can anyone confirm this? If I drain the fluid will I need 12 quarts to fill it up or is there some left in the tourque converter which includes the 12 quarts?

Buy 6 quarts and be perpaired to put in 4 and run the engine and check after ten minutes so the oil runs down the dipstick tube. Most of the time 2005 only take 5 quarts. Yes the torque converter and dry trans takes 12 quarts but you also did not drain the oil cooler.

should have fill plugs, there on the drivers side one is lower than the other , but they should look the same. you have to be able to change your internal fluids.
