I got laid off from my previous job that I had for 5 months and I filed for unemployment and got awarded but the money is coming from the employer before the one that laid me off? What's going on?

Would it matter if I quit the job that's paying the unemployment? I've never filed for unemployment before and it's not making any sense. I'm in CA if that matters! Thanks for your response.

In my state, California, your benefits are based on your earnings for the four quarters ended two full quarters ago. If that is the case for you, your wages from you last employer are not included in the equation.

The money comes from the state unemployment fund, not from your previous employers. Generally any job you held for the last 2 years is figured in calculating your beneift.

You hadn't worked long enough for that employer for their info to be the majority of what was required to qualify you. They go back two years, and at least in my state, use the employer from the most recent completed year. That doesn't say that the last employer wasn't paying into the fund.
