My mom's birthday is in like 3 days and my sister and I have no idea what to get her. She is a very difficult person to shop for. She has been saying that she is going to get a blender because doesn't eat enough fruit because she just doesn't like it unless its in a smoothie and I guess she forgot she was going to get one... i dont know. A blender seems like it is just something that you give to a newly wed couple. But I guess I can give her that now and a more meaningful gift at Christmas. What do you think?

It is in no way dumb to get your mother a blender. So many people think they have to give that wonderful, fancy, but oh-so useless gift on display in a department store window. I would love to trade in all my knick knacks and get some really good practical stuff.

Your mother obviously wants a blender but may be like many people and is just reluctant to spend the money, even relatively cheap things can seem over priced. Or she may be wondering how many times she'll use it and is afraid of buying something that'll be in the closet forever.

What am I getting at?

She would love to be GIVEN a blender. It may not sound cool but she will appreciate it. My brothers gave my parents a George Forman grill and it is a big hit. It is something practical and easy to use, and it allowed them to cook meats easily. A blender will allow your mom to have fun with fruits and she might like experimenting with it, like it was a new toy.

If you are a little worried about getting the blender, just get a gift receipt with it. Say something like "I heard you wanted a blender but if its just not right for you we can get you something else."

Be prepared to receive a big hug from your mom :-)

Do you know what kind of blender she wants? Does she want one that has a plastic pitcher or does she prefer glass? How large? How powerful. If you don't know these answers, why don't you and your sister go in together and buy a gift certificate to Linens N Things or Sears or whatever store is likely to carry the small home appliances that your Mom will be interested in. You can even tell her that you want her to buy the blender of her dreams :) That way you know that she got the very blender that she's been wanting.

A blender is NOT a lame gift. My husband gave one to me for Christmas last year and to be honest, he has benefited in the form of milk shakes and smoothies :) I love it!

I think your mother would appreciate receiving a blender, since she has commented about how having one would improve her diet. I use my blender at least 3 times a day (smoothies), but that's beside the point. The main thing is that your mother wants a blender, for a good reason, and I can't think of a better time to get her one.

If it was me (I'm a mom) I would love that gift if I said I wanted to start making smoothies. A blender is something that you typically don't buy for yourself (too many other things...like bills, you need to spend your money on). So I would absolutely love that gift.

Aw... Know what? You may consider yourself a jerk, but I've got to admit, you ain't, and the good mothering shows in that...LOL When a person desrves it, it's not enough, it's never enough, that's why we call it a *show* of our appreciation. Now, on the other end of the spectrum, I'm wondering if my egg donor will notice the slight almondy taste to her meal on Sunday...yep, once again I'm hosting another large gathering pretty much at gun point.

Sounds like a great gift, maybe along with a smoothie cookbook. If you want to make it even more special, you could give her a certificate that she can call you to come over and make her smoothies.

I can totally sympathize. My mom is the exact same way. Get her the blender, with a gift receipt. If she doesn't like it she can return it.
