In an encyclical on Christian hope, Pope Benedict XVI said that, without faith in God, humanity lies at the mercy of ideologies that can lead to "the greatest forms of cruelty and violations of justice."
He does realize that the Catholic church has historically been the most brutal, violent religious institution ever created responsible for countless millions of deaths, or did he skip that part of his history book?

Imacatholic, you've gotten into the trap of comparing things that shouldn't be compared. The Soviet Union was not killing people in the name of atheism on a wide scale, I'm not saying this has never happened, but if you want to count ever murder by an atheist or an atheist country, you'd have to do the same for the religious, which would be the majority of murders ever commited.

I think his hat might be too tight.
I wonder if those "appalling possibilities for evil." include things like the inquisitions, the crusades, the conquest of the new world, the holocaust, Pearl Harbor, and 9/11....
These were all committed by people precisely because of their faith in one god or another. Seems to me like these "greatest forms of cruelty and violations of justice." are most likely to be committed BECAUSE of someones faith rather than due to its absence.
The "crisis of Christian hope" might be the most promising thing I've heard come out of the Vatican in decades...

that's a non secular "beginning," meaning starting to be a sparkling individual. that's our cultural language activity for signifying that this individual has replaced, and the ritual that is going with it (water baptism) symbolizes a 2nd beginning. that's a public confirmation that this individual has been made form new. And snice we stay sinners even after this occurs, we are being born back continuously, as we admit our errors and attempt to maximum staggering them and do greater desirable. we are constantly starting to be new. the super element approximately this metaphor is that no count number how far you have long gone down the different course, no count number how evil you have been, there is often wish in being made new.

It simply proves the ignorance of the church and their beliefs. Did you know they are not allowed to read their holy books? If they ever started you would never see them. The Vatican has a library that is miles long with more hidden information than can be imagined.
All of the religions have to keep their flocks ignorant. If they don't - they will lose to much money. That is why the church says - give them a child and they will make them a believer for life. Why? Brainwash them, put fear in their minds and they will do anything. Tell them they will go to heaven after they die and all things are solved. Fear is a great weapon and through the countless centuries they used it well and are great teachers to the other christian faiths.

The Atheistic Soviet Union was responsible for the death of 61,911,000 victims of genocide and mass murder in just 70 years from 1917 to 1987: http://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/NOTE4.HTM
I find it interesting when some people say that the proven and documented crimes against humanity of the Atheistic Communist leaders of the 20th century cannot be blamed on Atheism but the almost mythical crimes of "Catholic" leaders for the last 20 centuries should be blamed on Catholicism today.
Have you read Pope Benedict's encyclical Spe Salvi: On Christian Hope? Here it is: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/encyclicals/documents/hf_ben-xvi_enc_20071130_spe-salvi_en.html
With love in Christ.

I'm sure he does cause he used to be head of that department:
"As head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith - once known as the Holy Office of the Inquisition - from 1981 until his election, the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger had developed a reputation as a tough theologian."

I almost fell out of my chair laughing. Does he not know the history of the Church? Perhaps this is like when Bush says that the United States doesn't torture.

you are right the catholic church is hoping the human race will forget how it came to have influence on the earth....
people without faith in god have: promoted peace... ex John Lennon.... have fought for freedom... are the one's who introduced.. women's rights... children's rights... civil rights... equality between races... more peaceful resolution between countries... how is this a violation of justice... and through it all there is always a church representation fighting against these changes for they don't originate from the church... in other words people on their own are changing the world for the better without the church's permission..... what hypocrites they are...
