I stayed home alone for the weekend when I was 15. However, I was a mature responsible teenager, so my mom was not too worried. Also I had an aunt who lived nearby as well as a few neighbors I knew well.
My brother was not allowed to stay alone until he was 17 (but was very close to 18 at the time) because he was less mature than I was.

It really depends on the maturity level of those who would be staying alone. And you should not have them alone overnight watching each other (Don't leave a 16 year old and a 12 year old overnight expecting that the 16 year old will watch the 12 year old...)

I live in Montana on an Air Force Base, (my hubby is active duty) and I'll answer your question from the military housing rules view point. NO child can be left alone under the age of 10, 10-12 can be left alone for 2 hours max, 16 and up, can be left alone longer than 2 hours or overnite. Hope that helps!

Illinois and Maryland are the only states that have laws on this... the general rule is no one under 16 should be left alone overnight. If it were me, I wouldn't allow anyone under 18 to babysit overnight, but it is your mother's decision.

I'm concerned that your mother isn't the one looking into this herself. Seems like if you have to ask this question, the answer is probably "no, you all are too young to stay home alone overnight".

I don't really know the answer...but my friend is a single dad who is a firefighter. he kids are 16 AND 17 - he leaves them alone all night.

i just met him 8 months ago..but it sounds like he's been doing this for at least a year or two.

so iwould assume 16 is 'of age'.
