1.5-6x42 has more magnification than a 4x32, and should be better overall for hunting and target shooting. A fixed 4-power scope cannot zoom in further; it is fixed at 4 power, whereas the other will go all the way to 6, which is 50% more magnification. It will also go all the way down to 1.5, which could be better for running game. The variable you list also has a larger objective lens (42 mm vs. 38mm), which should provide more light transmission, clarity, etc.

The 42 means that the recticle, or the part that gathers light is 42 mm. It would do better in dim conditions than the 38. Also, the 1.5 -6 should zoom in further. This is the kind of scope I have on my 22. 6 is more powerful than the 4, and 1.5 is good for shooting target, or close up. If you like 4x, you could always adjust to it. Is it possible that the 4 x 38 is a 4-12 x 38? If that is the case, it would be a better scope for hunting.

Well, I would say the 4x38 is a better hunting scope, but the 1.5-6x42 is more of a target shooting scope. A lot of times when out hunting you don't have enough time to adjust the scope to the perfect level, you can't just ask a deer to stop running while you readjust how much magnification your scope has. Whereas in a target shooter, there is no actual rush to get a shot off, the target isn't going to run into the brush or dive back down a hole like a live animal. So you can take the time to adjust to the right magnification.

it largely depends on the distances you'll be hunting. I would think the 1.5-6x42 would be better, since you can adjust the magnification to suit your needs. But if you like the 4x38 fixed power better (a lot of it has to do with scope quality), then use that. You're the one that will be shooting with it, use whichever you like better!

1.5-6x42mm would be a bit better scope in the magnifaction department.
That scope is not a target scope. That is a low power scope made for close to medimum range shots.
The 42mm objective is larger there for gathering more light than a 38mm. It also will allow for a bit of a wide field of view. Which very well could still be smaller than the 4x38mm. The more magnifacation will creat a smller field of view.

1.5 is a variable and the 4 is a fixed. Try your hand with both and see which fits you better. We are all different and what works for one person doesn't always for the other.

well if the 4x38 zooms in further i would say that one because you will be able to see farther. power doesn't matter without zoom
