With him only working part time (and trying to go to school, too) he may be able to handle a roommate situation or a rooming house better than trying to hold down an apartment on his own. It's not just the rent, but the utilities, food, gas, and incidentals, too that need to be considered. The advantage of a roommate situation is that he ducks all the start-up costs associated with establishing a household, so his credit isn't really a factor. (Of course there's a separate personality to get to know and deal with.) Renting rooms offer the same advantages as being a roommate in that there are no start-up costs to consider. Also, utilities may be included, but these places are typically a great deal more spartan where ammenities are concerned. What you absolutely DO NOT want to do is co-sign on his behalf. Good luck as you negotiate this dilemma.

tell them to ask if he can pay a security deposit or first and last months rent or something, to show good faith since he has less than perfect credit.

I have AAAAAAAAAA...like, he should get a full-time job and then he can, ya know, pay the rent.
