I would assume he knew beforehand that this was a temporary situation? It sounds like you are afraid to hurt his feelings. Understandable. I guess it would depend on how you and him communicate in general. With me and my siblings, some I'm able to be blunt and straightforward, others I have to tip-toe around when I need to say something important. It was probably comforting to be near you after your Dad passed, but now he has to start thinking of his own future and living arrangements. June is a realistic and fair amount of time to give him, but only you can decide if you'll need to let him know by dropping hints or just coming right out and saying, "I think you need to work on being more independent, etc." and open up the dialogue. If he is not good at managing his money, you could tell him you will help him plan a budget to put himself in the best possible position for himself. Best Wishes.

June is more than enough time since he's been living with you for 6 months already.

Tell him you love him, but his moving in with you was only a temporary measure. He needs to stop spending money on tools and such and start saving so he'll have a nice chunk of change to get his own place plus have some for emergencies.

Start looking in the area for places for him to move to so you'll both have an idea of what his moving costs will be. He'll need money for deposit, rent, utility deposits etc just to start. He can call the utility companies to see what the average bill was in the past for any place he really likes. This doesn't mean his bills will be the same. Some people use more than others.

It might be a good idea for him to have enough set aside over the above mentioned to tide him over at least one month in case of illness or other mishaps.

Don't tell he has until June. Put a deadline on him, 2 months at the most.
