It is very expensive to live in the San Francisco Bay area....but other parts of Northern California are much less expensive.

A good place to check this out would be http://www.craigslist.com. You can browse different cities and see how much apartments/houses rent for.

anywhere within a 60 mile radius on San Francisco is very expensive. The further you go from there, the cheaper it gets. The exception would be the Monterey Bay. The true Northern California (past Sacramento inland and Santa Rosa coastal) is very rural and much cheaper.
