Depending upon the area (Aztecs, Mayans, Olmecs and many others all called various parts of modern Mexico home) - it's all pretty much a mix of Animism/Polytheistic beliefs.
Aztecs are the most famous (and their descendants make up the bulk of Mexico). They had a sizable pantheon of deities and an organized, powerful priesthood. They had the organization and bureaucracy of a monotheistic church, but had the pantheon on par with Hinduism. It was very much concerned with the continuation of the universe and the progression of time. Everything had it's place and had to be balanced, they worked very hard to please their gods to maintain the universe.

The Aztecs were in Mexico before the Spaniards came and forced the conversion and basically wiped out the entire population of the brilliant civilization.

I'm a Catholic too..and lately Catholics have really been under the gun by many people who call themselves Christians. If we are all on the same side in terms of belief in our Triune God, then why should one group be attacking another? It makes absolutely no sense to me at all. So much rage and hate amongst so called 'believers'. Religion itself doesn't matter to God, your personal relationship with Him does. Many people call themselves Christian but they hate, never forgive and certainly do not love. Believe in God the Father and Jesus..God will do the rest..God bless.

Whatever the Mayans or Aztecs worshipped. They were the ones here right before the Spanish brought Christianity over there.

I'm not sure there really was one. I mean, there were the Aztecs, but there were other groups in the area as well. Each one of them had their own belief system. My understanding is that it's much like how different Native American tribes have their own religions here in the states.

There were various native civilizations that inhabited pre-Columbian Mexico. They each had their own unique beliefs. I don’t think it would be right to pick any one religion as the main religion.

The nahuatl people(what we mistankenly refer to as Aztec) were pagans....they believed in many gods.....they year Cortez and his men arrived in Tenochtitlan, was supposed to be the year when Quetzalcoatl would return. The people of Tenochtitlan believed that Cortez was Quetzalcoatl because of prophsies....so in short....they were pagan.
