The other members have given you very good recipes for your cake. Choose one and make it. What I want to give you is some advice because almost any recipe you choose will result in a cake. Good techniques combined with a good recipe will result in an excellent cake.

Remember baking is more science that art. So don't get creative until you understand the recipe and how is will turn out. Follow the directions exactly and don't make any substitutions.

Make sure that your oven is preheated to the correct temperature. It is always good if you have an oven thermometer to be sure.

Do not over mix your cake. Mix it just until the ingredients are combines and the batter has a smooth appearance. Beating it too much could cause it to to be dry and even crack.

I applaud you for wanting to make the cake from scratch rather than going out and buying a package mix. This way you know exactly what you are putting in your mouth and can be relatively certain the ingredients were produced in a Chinese chemical lab.

Also your daddy will appreciate your efforts.

Good luck and just e-mail me if you need any help.

This is a pretty simple recipe for you. Your dad will love it. Just take your time and follow the directions....You will do just fine :)

Hershey's Dark Chocolate Cake
A recipe from the Sneaky Kitchen

1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup Hershey's Cocoa or Special Dark Cocoa
2 eggs
1 cup milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup boiling water

Heat oven to 350°F. Grease & flour two 9" round pans or one 13"x9"x2" baking pan.

Stir together sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda & salt in large bowl. Add eggs, milk, oil & vanilla; beat on medium speed by electric mixer 2 min. Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin). Pour into prepared pans.

Bake 30 to 35 min. for round pans, 35 to 40 min. for rectangular, or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. (Cake may be left in rectangular pan, if desired.)

I just looked at a couple good ones this afternoon on the Betty Crocker website. The one I thought looked best was the Red Devil's food with simpe vanilla buttercream frosting.
