This is a site for a northern California Persian, Himalayan, and exotic cat rescue center. The cats are not dirt cheap but they don't cost a fortune either.

Here is a directory of California pet shelters and animal rescue centers.

It can also be quite easy to find kittens for free around your own neighborhood or advertised in the newspaper .

There are not a lot of kittens available in December. Winter is a time for cat breeding, there is a two month period for gestation and then another two months before the kittens are weaned and ready for adoption.

Depending on how "northern" you are in CA the San Francisco SPCA has young kittens in Macy's store windows in the city all through the Christmas period. Their adoption fees are very reasonable (about half of what the Marin Humane Society charges for instance).

Christmas is not the best time to bring a kitten into your home. With lots of celebration they can get under foot and get hurt easily. With people coming and going all the time it is easy for a kitten to get outside and get lost. Also the hullabaloo of festivities can frighten a kitten or a new cat. If you get a cat or kitten through a shelter hopefully you will receive some counseling about these issues.

I am not sure how far away from Redding CA you are but PetSmart is a great place to adopt kitties. Here is a list of the partners for this store. Usually, all shots and spay/ neuter have been included in a $80 - $150 total charge to adopt. It is much less expensive than going to a vet for the same services.

There's a shelter in Santa Clara, California, which is where I got my furbaby--thirteen years ago. Many cities have shelters or humane societies that adopt out cats and dogs. Many shelters have very reasonable adoption fees and will either ensure the animal is spayed before she leaves the shelter or give you a voucher to have her spayed at a local vet.

Look online for your local Animal Care and Control, people drop off beautiful kittens there all the time, and I think you only have to pay like 50 the most.

Google it. Just look up animal shelter in your area. You'll probably get to a site for the whole network. But if you look around you will be able to find a place to type in your zip code. If all else failes go to whitepages.com, it has businesses too. And if you still can't find one pull out the phone book!!! Gasp, how old fashened, but it works.

We just gave away some kittens and we had them adverstised in Craigslist.com. So check the website for your area. Kittens are usually under the free section. You could even post an ad for free stating that you are looking for a kitten
