You can buy a set of regular mattresses at a store for alot less than a sleep number bed. Just look for some sale flyers, mattresses are always on sale.

I think Sleep number beds are over-rated. We had one and put it in the guest room.
Depending on your budget, consider a Latex bed. You don't get as hot as you do on the memory foam beds. We purchased the Sealy "Reflexion". Different stores have different names for it but they are all made by Sealy. See link below. I like it because there are no springs and no foam. Therefore nothing to wear out and no dust mites. I used to think a mattress was a mattress but my wife wanted something different. This is the best sleep I've ever had on a bed.
As an alternative to an expensive Latex bed, buy a regular mattress and use the memory foam pads from Bed Bath & Beyond or Linen-N-Things...get the best one they have.Good luck and forget the fouton! :>

Stay away from memory foam - it's awful if you have a bad back. Try some conventional mattresses and find one that works for you. Lie down on it in the store - position yourself how you normally sleep. Ask about a warranty - most stores will give you thirty days. And more $$$ does not mean a better mattress.

SLEEP NUMBER, I have had one for over 5 yrs and I will never buy another bed again 20 yr warranty to. But they are sooooo worth it. Seriously they are so unbelievably comfortable it will blow your mind. I have never tried a tempurpedic, but then again I will never try another bed. But they can be pricey but if you can spare the cash you will definately not regret it. I dont want to sound like the commercial but the first time you lay down on it, it will knock you out so fast, and it will most likely help with your back. My old parents have em and so do my sisters and no one has ever complained. Best of Luck to You.

Give the futon another go for sure. Ok, so they are harder than the beds that you are use to but they are actually good for your back. If, after a week or so, you still don't like the futon, go and get yourself an inner spring, orthopedic bed. A foam mattress gives you no support at all and your back will defiantly give you grieve.

my father has a sleep number bed an loves it, i have a regular mattress with a pillow top and it is a spring mattress an i can sleep at night. i think you just need to go to sears or a local mattress store and lay on one for thirty minutes and if the sales person wont let you then take your buisiness somewhere else.i say thirty minutes because it takes your body a little while to unwind and relax. there are some good deals out there you just have to look and please be patient you do not want to buy junk

How people get a good nights sleep on a "Wooden pallet"
is beyond me And how they manage to get up and off a futon in the morning is also a complete mystery to me
one company that makes orthapaedic beds is Sealy
if you enter sealy into a web search via your browser
it should show the manafacture website or a agent for sealy

You need a firm bed with a pillow top. It is awesome. You can also go and purchase a thick mattress cover. It is suppose to help keep stains off the mattress however it had extra comfort to the mattress.

I have a Tempurpedic bed and LOVE it! But I think it's nearly as expensive as a sleep number bed.
It took me about 5 years to make up my mind to spend the money on the bed, but I'm glad I did.
