Hubby, doggy, my baby and I just went for a walk outside. There were 2 small dogs following us no matter where we went. One stopped though.
They sniffed our legs and kept walking next to us.
I felt uncomfy cause you never know.. He could've been sick or whatever.
At some point he left us alone. I'm glad this was a small breed because last time a German Shepard did the same thing.

Grrr I hate when I can't see an owner and they're not on a leash.

Yes it is possible, but u may need the help of a dog obedience school to train him. However, I think walking a dog without a leash is risky as something may distract him and he could dart out in front of a car or he may get into an encounter with another animal and u`d have no way of controlling him. In any regard most everywhere there is a leash law, ur dog must be on a leash unless it is a designated, fenced area specifically for dogs. If I were u, I`d rethink the off leash bit if only for legal reasons.

You could report the dogs with a description to your local animal control officer, but I think that I would have tried to check to see if it/they had any ID tags so that I could notify the owner.

Most dogs that are friendly and will follow you when you are walking have been well trained, and are most likely being well taken care of even though they are wandering around without a leash.

The next time you go for a walk with your husband and baby and have this happen, you could also call the local police department, tell them it is not an emergency and tell them about the dogs and where they are located, they will contact the dog officer and check everything out so that you don't have to be concerned.

Good luck and have a Merry Christmas.

If the dog isn't being aggressive, then simply turn and stand in front of him. If there's still no aggression, then try to find out if there's a collar and tag. If there is then you have the option of calling the owner. If not, then you have the option of calling animal control. Keep a cell phone on you when you go for a walk because you don't know if a dog will get suddenly aggressive and you have to call for help. If you decide to call animal control, I guarantee this will only happen a couple of times before people start leashing their pets in this area.

What's the big deal? They weren't aggressive, they didn't cause a problem, but it is annoying when people let their dogs roam not on a leash. Did you check for tags to call the owners or call animal control? Did you just let the dogs keep roaming to bug someone else or get hit by a car or did you try to solve the problem?
In my opinion, people that just allow dogs to keep running around free and don't try to remedy the situation are just as bad as the owners that let it go in the first place. But that's just me.
In the future, carry pepper spray in case the dogs are aggressive, but if they aren't, just try to figure out where they belong or call animal control.

If there is a leash law in your community, I would see if the dogs have tags (if you are not afraid to check for collars/tags - so long as they seem friendly) - and then jot down the info on the tag and 1) call the owner and/or 2) animal control. Perhaps they are friendly and you remind them of "family", or they are lonely - since not all pets are well taken care of, sadly.

I understand, our neighbors had a dog that was always digging under the fence and follwed me and Luna on our walks. Nothing I did worked to get rid of him and Luna seemed to love playing with him, she would dig out of our fence to get to him :shakes head: . We talked to the owners and he hasn't been out recently, thank goodness.

Anyway, I mean to say I understand what you're going through. If this happens again, you may want to call animal control to take care of it. You may also want to try walking somewhere else. While this was happening, I discovered a nature reserve less then 5 miles from the house and me and Luna had a lot of fun hiking it. There may be a park where ya'll could walk instead. Change may be good for you :)

oh. kk then wear gloves and put the dogs in a carrier so they cant bite u. then take them to the vet. give it rabies shots. put up "found" posters around the place were u found them. put an ad in the paper if u have enough money. look for the owners. if u cant find owners, just keep them, put them in the pound, or sell them to the pet shop

I think you did the best thing. You would have ended up with 2 more dogs if you had stopped. And as you said, they could be sick.
