You have asked if you "should" be offended - but this is beside the point. You felt offended, and you need to acknowledge your feelings. Of course she would have given someone else a different gift. But be generous and give her the benefit of the doubt - she may not have meant to be racist - maybe she just has a dumb sense of humour, or maybe she genuinely thought you'd love it and she was trying to show an appreciation of your culture. Whatever the explanation, what you do about it depends on the type of person you are, the type of person she is and the circumstances. I would probably ignore it (once, but not twice), or perhaps you have a mutual friend and you could just casually mention to this person that you found the gift a bit odd and wonder what she meant by it? Probably ignore it this time, but don't keep ignoring it if it goes on - she'll just see you as an easy target.

I think that she/he was hoping for a laugh. Maybe that person thought that the gifts were supposed to be "gag gifts". I think that you should just laugh it off. And find out who gave it to you out of curiosity.(I would try to) I wouldn't question the notion that it was a racist person, that will not do you any good. The best thing to think of would be a friend who wanted to amuse you. I think that it was a shoddy gift too.
I'd use the chickpeas to make some delicious hummus and send it to that person once you find out who. :)

Your user name is Persian Princess, so I am assuming you are of Persian ancestry. That gift could have been an attempt to offer you some of your native people's food, or it could have been a racial insult. I really can't tell.

Either way, shrug it off. The giver was either confused about what a proper gift should be, or was making a cruel racist statement and doesn't deserve your attention.

Is this person usually mean to you or blatantly racist?? it sounds like an insulting gift if it is just because of your ethnic background. It is hard to know if the intention was good or bad not knowing the person. However, be the bigger person and let it go. If it was intentional then this person isn't worth getting upset about...she is just incredibly ignorant.

It is an odd gift, but don't assume she had bad intentions. Sometimes people give a gift they'd enjoy receiving without thinking too much about whether you'll like it or not.

Ask her what her intent was.
If she's rude to you then you know her gift was intended to be offensive and you should report her to school authorities for her behaviour.

Did other people give jokey gifts? It sounds like she was trying to be funny.

That's odd; maybe it has something to do with her culture? Or maybe she thought you'd like it?
