Hi-
My dog doesn't have fleas, but it itchy and scratching herself raw. I wiped one spot off earlier because it was oozing. Nasty. She is licking and has patches of skin where the fur is gone. She was treated for hot spots this summer, but this has all happened in the past two or three days. Any ideas what it is? She is six and has never been like this before. I doubt it is allergies. We just moved... she used to have two dogs and a cat with her, now she is solo. Can this much scratching and licking be because she is bored or anxious about something? I've been giving her plenty of attention. She shouldn't be like this. I'm taking her to the vet, but I wanted to know what it might be first.

It either sounds like allergies, or mange.

Either way, I would ask the Vet these questions of course.

What food are you feeding?

Or could be some kind of bacterial infection on the skin.

Yes, it could be a combination of anxieties and allergies.
Changes are just as hard on dogs as people.
Also, Beneful dog food is rotten food.
Give her food with omega vitamins for her skin and coat. No artificial colorings or preservatives. that causes a lot of problems for animamls. An anti histamine might help.
See a vet to help you get it under control because secondary infections will make her really ill.

'I'm taking her to the vet but I wanted to know what it might be first.'

Er - no! You're going to the vet to find out what it might be! No one on here can tell you - we're not vets, and even vets can't diagnose over the internet!

This kind of thing is complicated. People on here can give you guesses, and I'm sure they will, but it's better to ignore guesses because they'll just make you paranoid and besides, no one on here really knows what they're talking about - so be patient and wait to talk to the vet.

Here are my guesses in order of likelihood 1)Hot spots (since she has a history of them) 2)allergies (can crop up at any time) 3) Fleas (what do you treat her with?)

it could definitely be anxiety because of all the changes. but my dog randomly started itching and it turned out he was allergic to his food, so now he eats organic food. he was fine his whole life and then he randomly became allergic. so the vet will be able to fix it. don't worry about it, i'm sure she's fine.
