Ok, i'm almost 17, and I want to join the marines. I had a problem w/childhood asthma and can get a waiver for that, but i found out that I will have to get off my allergy shots for a year. But I cannot live at my grandma's house w/out the shots because of her cats, which are the only thing I am allergic to. The marines or the military are the only chance I will have to do something with my life, because I am not very fond of school. What do you think I should do, and do you think I wil be able to join?

Hey man, I know how you feel I need a waiver for NROTC and a few other programs as back ups, and its got my nerves on edge wondering if I will actually get. Seems like you've done your research and talked to a recruiter already so you seem well informed. My advise would be to apply to the other branches as well, yes I know you want to be a Marine but waivers can be tricky and sometimes can be denied for no apparent reason. The Army and the Marines are alot easier to get waivered by because we are in war and are down sizing the air force and navy so your chances are great for the Marines, but keep your options open. Now, yes you will have to get off the shots, which sucks but maybe you can talk to your grandma about getting rid of the cats. I know that seems harsh but shes y our flesh and blood shell keep an open mind, also talk to your doctor and see alternatives you can do to reduce your allergies without shots. Who knows maybe there is something, and also talk to your recruiter see what he thinks.

Good Luck Bro hope everything turns out good, and its an honorable thing. OORAH!

I also have allergies to cats (I can't even be in my parents' van), but the Army took me. No cats in the military unless you are a veterinarian or you go to somebody's house after hours that has 17 cats.

Get off the allergy shots; get yourself a bronchial inhaler. Away from Gramma's and you will be just fine and pass your physical with ease. Also invest in Visine for teary eyes, Kleenex (Puffs with lotion so you don't rub your nose raw), and maybe some nasal drip medication. Look into showering at least once a day to get the cat dander off and kick the cats out of your room.

Stay in school and graduate so you will be eligible for college benefits when you join.

I never was part of the Marine Corps, but I did have a platoon leader, 2LT Garrett who had five years in the USMC and left as a Sergeant (rifleman and machine gunner) before he went to college (Texas A&M). He says the Corps is good, but the Army runs a much more sane system and is not part of the Navy.

Why did I join? I was born in Bosnia in 88, and a war broke out there in 1992 so I seen all the man in my family go off to war and I wanted to a Soldier ever since. I moved to the US when I was 10 and later witnessed the 9/11 attack on WTC from my school window and I was pissed since those were my favorite buildings that stuck in my head and made me what do join even more, also US gave me so much so me giving back was another reason. So you can say: fallowing my dad and rest of the males in my family, 9/11 and wanting to give back Branch: Army and my job title was Infantry I was 17 years old. I did not re-enlist, I got out 6 months ago off Active Duty because my next thing is to be a cop. Obviously I am not a lifer thats on Active Duty, Reserves is more like it. I can be a soldier and a cop at same time, best thing ever. What will I do since I got out? Become a cop, waiting for the call now, been going to college and working at local bank My military experience was awesome, I enjoyed it and would not trade it for anything. I would do it all over again if I had to.

If you can, avoid Parris Island and try San Diego for basic. However, it depends on where you live. I lived in Iowa and they wanted to send me to Parris.I didn't like school either, but you're doing yourself an injustice by not keeping your grades up, which will give you a better choice for careers. I'm asking you out of experience...get/keep your grades up so you can choose a career that you will be happy with and can use when/if you choose to separate. Marines are a great group of h*** raisers when it comes to fighting. No better choice than to fight with the best. Another thing--run,run and run as the Marines can't get enough of it, or pull-ups. Get a chin-up bar and put it in the garage or someplace away from the cats, strap a backpack on and fill it with rocks and go hiking a couple miles a day, and carry a walking stick when hiking to simulate a rifle. In other words, start kicking your own a** now and it may help a little later. Get out of your grannys house and go hike or run or something, and your allergies may ease up. Perhaps, I know it may be insulting to your granny--wear those white allergy masks when around the cats and keep them out of your room and perhaps try a humidifier when you sleep at night. If you can, see the school nurse and explain the predicament to her and she may be able to recommend something. Hope this helps. HOORAH!

Go to the store and get some benedryl. That should help you with your cat allergies. As far as the corps goes, enlist. What do you have to lose? The military is a great way of life. A paycheck every two weeks, free housing if you have a family, free medical and dental. Go for it. OOH RAH!

Asthma past age 12 is disqualifying for entry. There are no waivers because the condition can re-emerge as exercise-induced bronchospasm during training.
