I do not own a Pit, but I worked for a no-kill shelter for quite awhile when growing up and did quite a bit of training. I honestly believe the temperment of the Pit Bull is a direct correlation to the training and treatment it receives from the owner. Unfortunately, the Pit Bull is largely treated as a status symbol as opposed to a dog or pet. Alot of people that should NOT be allowed within 50 feet of a dog chose to own the Pit Bull because they think it makes them look tough to have one. Not because they love the dog or breed. The end result is an unruly, uncontrollable, and often times abused and vicious animal that has no respect for people. The Pit Bull is a very strong animal, and not respecting people as it's alpha certainly leads to trouble. It is important to remember that any dog that is treated badly is a dangerous dog. The jaw strength of a Pit Bull is much greater than alot of other dogs, making them notorious when they attack because it does that much more damage. The media contributes to the plight of the Pit Bull, also. Golden Retrievers used to have the most bites per year of any breed (not sure if that is still current information or not), but how many Golden bites do you hear about in the news? Or any other breed, for that matter? You don't, unless the attack was especially severe. But when a Pit Bull bites - even if by bites it is a very mild one - it is one of the top news story that evening. My favorite dogs to work with when they came in to the no-kill shelter were our Pit Bulls and Pit mixes - as a whole, in my experience they are easy to train, attentive dogs. It is a shame they do not get the respect or love they deserve. A little bit of time and love in a Pit Bull leads to a wonderful dog.

Just a suggestion - Loyalty is usually an adjective that is applied to dogs in general. Saying a Pit Bull is loyal does not differentiate it from any other breed of dog. A Golden Retriever is loval, and poodle is loyal, all dogs are loyal (if they weren't loyal, they'd be called cats).
The quality of the Pit that makes them stand out is their athleticism, their strength. Unfortutantely, their strength is also their weakness. Because they are so strong, they can easily hurt other dogs when they get into a fight. This means the temperament of the individual dog needs to be considered selecting a pup. This is true of any breed, but even more important in big, strong dogs such as Pits.
I guess my point is that if you are going to make a speech about Pits, you should give the good and the bad about the breed and also talk about how to avoid the bad and maximize the good. If you just say "the pit is loyal and gets a bad rap", then it isn't a good speech. But if you say "Pits don't bite any more that any other dog. But because they are so strong, if they do bite, it's going to hurt. So here are ways to pick a pit that isn't going to bite".. then that is a good speech. You're promoting the Pit and you're educating your audience.
I hope this helps.

Pit bulls are given a bad rep because of the bad owners... I have two pits now and I had some when I was younger. When properly trained and socialized they are the biggest teddy bears. Right now I have a 3lb chihuaua a 8week old pit blue and a 65lbs pit that is 6months. The biggest pit I have is a teddy bear to the chihuaua, you would think he would be his lunch. We have a 3 year old and he lets her pull his ears ride him as a horse. The Chihuaua is the vicious one lol that thinks he is 100lbs.
But really they are a good family dog that is protective of the family. They are good right hand dogs and can sense EVERY feeling Im convinced.. and just like any other dog if there is good energy and vibes the dog wont even think to bite a human, child, or dog.
They are loyal if you are loyal to them. They are good to a family especially. They have lots of energy and again when raised with love and proper training and attention will act as if they were a little "Paris Hilton Dog".
The other thing is if the dog is attacked by another dog then their inner instincts come out and they will attack. BUT this specific breed were raised to be family dogs and security dogs, because of their loving side for a family, and mean streak for the "bad people"

In the UK at least, where 'pit bull type dogs' have been illegal to own since 1991, vets, police officers and dog wardens have admitted that the number of pit bull attacks have not decreased in those 16 years. In other words, even though hundreds of pit bulls were removed from loving families and destroyed, similar numbers of attacks still occur as when the dogs were with their families. That's a powerful statistic - it shows that you don't prevent attacks simply through banning posession of a breed, that those who own a dog illegally are almost completely responsible for its bad behaviour and aggression. Point that out, under the adjective 'misunderstood'.

Pit Bulls are a lot of things. They are loyal, they are affectionate, friendly, Very Eager to Please!! All they want to do is make their owner happy. They are fun and playful. They are athletic. I could go on forever. I just think American Pit Bull Terriers are the Perfect dog.
I love this website. It gives a lot of really good statistics. Maybe it will help during your speech, especially if classmates will be asking questions at the end of your speech.

Pit Bulls are great dogs! You have some great adjectives listed above. AND for all you pit bull bashers if you're curious to know why you hear about so many "Pit Bull" attacks? Statistics are no where near remotely accurate for the number of "Pit Bull" attacks. Why you ask? The answer is simple: people don't know what a Pit Bull truly is. Dont believe me? Take the quiz. http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html

My pits are very loyal, playful, friendly, active, loving, respectful, well behaved and can be lazy. Just the other night my 4 yr old female was running around the yard, jumping every few minutes trying to catch the snow as it was falling...
