LOL, you think girls went to school back then? Remember that she was already engaged to be married...just as most women at the time were engaged and/or married shortly after they became women (biologically). If he wanted a woman untouched by man, a teenager was the only real solution.
Just because we think of a 12-year-old as a child doesn't mean people have always thought that way...it doesn't even mean we are right. Fact is, times have changed...2,000 years ago a "child" of 12 was more mature than the average 18 year old today...many were already working and raising families. Heck, just 100 years ago teenage marriages were still VERY common in the US!

Because religion gives a cleansed version of what it was like during biblical days. According the the History of Christianity, God choose Mary at age 12 to marry Joseph because most girls were no longer virgins at age 13. Keep in mind that the life expectancy 2000 yrs ago, was not what is is today.

This is an interesting question.
Edit:
"Because she was without sin, untouched"
Tasha: She was born with original sin... how could she have been without sin?
Edit:
Dennis... are you serious?
"Found favor in her because she was a good christian and followed the Bible"
Christianity didn't exist then neither did the Bible. Back to Sunday School for you, young man!
Edit:
Superfoot: Are you likening the human brain to a brainless pot? If so, speak only for yourself and not the whole human race.
"Does the pot say to the potter, 'Why did you make me like this?'"
Edit:
"Heck, just 100 years ago teenage marriages were still VERY common"
Good point Kal. That sincerely has to be the best explanation I have seen yet. At least you are drawing off something real. Good show! I know my grandmother married when she was 14.

That's a question I have pondered time and time again... Perhaps because if he would have impregnated a married woman people wouldn't have been so convinced that the woman was a virgin! And back then people didn't classify people as "teenagers" Once a girl hit puberty she was considered a woman.

All those who do not folllow the ture religion of god...Your time is coming slow but surely...Only one way to tell who is right though...I probably won't see many of you where I am going as I am part of the group known as "gods choosen people" that this virigins son was also born into...

That wasn't an issue 2000 years ago. And NO ONE back then was a high school graduate! It would be nice if modern people could think. Even just a little!

Ok, I'm going to look past the highschool thing (let's remember what era this was) and answer your question. Why a virgin? Because she was without sin, untouched. Why unmarried? Because it was a sacrifice on her part. It wasn't supposed to be easy to say yes, and it wasn't supposed to be easy to explain to those who wouldn't believe her. That is the beauty of Mary, her "yes" in the face of such a difficult decision.

He didn't choose someone older because Mary was the one who was conceived without sin. Also, her age was a very common one in her culture for having children.

God chose whom He chose. Who are you to question His decision making? Does the pot say to the potter, "Why did you make me like this?"
Mountains out of mole-hills.
Trina:
This idea of what is formed questioning the maker is from God, so take it up with Him. He is the one who used pottery and a potter to make the point.
"But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? "Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, 'Why did you make me like this?' "Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?" (Romans 9:20,21)
