It is a VW Passat 2.8L V6. I just got it and I believe the dealer put regular in it and the manual says premium. Now the car is shaking a bit. Could this be a result of not having premium in it?

This really wont effect the car immidetly. Over time the gunk built up will and you will be faced with cleaning and changing the fuel pump. If the car has received that kind of gasoline forever then shaking will be the result of that...Dont but that car if its used and shakes. You are just going to waist more money fixing it.

Sometimes the car will hesitate when you give it gas. This is usually a summer problem and in the winter you can use a lower octane gas again. But just driving it shouldn't shake. I would take it back ASAP.

Or put in premium when it's time to fill it up. If the shaking stops that was the problem.

What does it require? Look at the gas cap or gas door. If it says premium required, then you MUST only use premium gas. If it says Premium Recommended, you can use whatever you want and mix octanes. It will not matter. If it says Regular recommended, you can also use any gas and it will not matter. Premium gas does not help with gas mileage or make your car more reliable. Instead, it adds about 5 horse power. Premium gas is required for turbocharger, superchargered, modified, high compression, high revving, or powerful engines. All Luxury cars usually require premium fuel, but check your gas cap. My car just needs regular so I use regular. And when I feel like racing and need the extra 5HP, I get premium gas.

Predetinate is the term for when the fuel mixtures burn before the the spark plug is fired, it can damage the engine after a long period. Try mid-grade gas see if it runs right, then you can try regular gas look for the same symptoms. In other words use lesser grade gas if your car can run properly on it. In your case it will probably be mid-grade. It will make a weird pinging noise if this is occurring.

Your engine has sensors that watch for pre-detonation, and the on-board computer tries to adjust the fuel mixture and timing to prevent engine damage. This causes a loss of power and MPG because the engine has a higher compression ratio. Use Mobil premium gas every time and "drive your engine clean" If that condition continues, you may need to have your computer reset to normal and "re-teach" it your driving habits, as it has a "learning" type computer.

If you use regular gas you will hear knocking sounds coming from the engine. Nothing is going to happen to the engine it just wont run like it should. Is it cold outside? cars shake when you first start them up in cold weather. Try filling it up with premium to see if the shaking contiues.

the VW 2.8 can run on 89 and 91 i do believe it is supposed to have 91 but will retard the timing and decrease hp and MPG if you run 89 but should not knock on 89. on 87 you might have some knocking i would run at least 89.

that could be.. i have a 07 jetta, and when i piut regular into it, it starts to knock a bit. The engine is made for 89 or higher octane, so when it only gets 87, it starts to fuss over it. It also makes you lose gas mileage, and dirty up the engine. dont be so cheap!! lol
