When you connect the PS3 and PSP together, you can transfer music, video, and pictures wirelessly.
Also if the PS3 is in stand by mode, you can turn the PS3 on by using the PSP, but first you have to enable it by going under the PS3's settings.
There is a feature called Remote Play as well. In Remote Play you can play your PS3 games on the PSP, but as of now, there is only one game that I know of that supports Remote Play and that game is Lair. I've seen a Youtube video of someone playing Lair on the PSP, so I know that it's possible.

I was lead to believe that the psp could be connected to the ps3 and be used as a rear-view mirror in racing games.

remember that the 60gb version is alot more advanced than 40gb version as 60 gb has memory cardslots(sd,mmc,ms,smc)etc and also has a stronger wifi connection and you cant play ps2 games on the 40gb version
