Good one!
Man, I'd love to hear you say that in W.C. Fields' voice.
Hey, how about this version?
"What's the point in having sex, if you're just going to wind up having an orgasm and being done with it? Doesn't that make sex meaningless?"

If you read the book and got nothing out of it and afterwards your life went on exactly as before, then yes it would be meaningless (not necessarily the book itself, but your reading of it). I really don't see how this relates to the afterlife, though, since neither you nor the book ceases to exist after the reading of it, but rather you go on living your life and the book goes on being read by others. The end of reading a book is not the end of its existence. In fact, you could say it is the beginning of a new existence, a "new life" as a part of your memory and thought patterns (assuming you do take something away from it and it isn't meaningless).

A book and, more importantly, life is never meaningless.
Catholics believe that life is a sacred gift from God and needs to be treated with all human dignity from the moment of conception to the point of natural death.
How can any life ever be considered meaningless? Even for Atheists?
With love in Christ.

In the Spiritual world the devil today is wreeking havoc just like he was back then, the prince of persia was a demon angel so strong only a few of Gods angels could defeat him. Its obvious that Angels have a ranking order of some kind. There is no doubt in my mind that the in Washington DC today and all across the countries of the world there are spiritual battles being fought. I like what Daniel was told at the end though, that he would stand in His lot at the end of the day. May we be able to do the same thing!!

No. However, if you thought that there was not an author for the book and that no one made the paper, printed it or bound it but it was all your doing just because you read it, then you would either be extremely naive or a fool.

because some of them seem to believe that this life is only a preperation for the next. from that point of view, what really counts is the afterlife.

Nope.
Is that your logic?
The second death is non-existence.
No tears, no pain, by your loved ones.
It is like you never existed.
Compare 80 years to eternity.
It is nothing.
