Here in Oklahoma a dozen eggs went from about 89 cents to $2.20. That is up about 250% in three weeks... maybe four.

What is the price in your hometown? Just name the state as I understand some people are still buying eggs less than a dollar still, while others have been paying double the prices since the summer.

Due to lack of news on the situation I find it surprising no one really knows what happened. We hear weather, but "most" of the country does not have bad weather. We hear that corn (typically fed to chickens) is now used for ethanol, but I don't buy that for a second since canned corn is selling for less that it was last year. Then we hear the bird flu and we are exporting eggs. I don't buy that either as it takes a little more than two or three weeks to funnel all those eggs immediately to other markets.

I think if a Toyota Camry went from $20,000 to $50,000 we would have heard about it and a very good reason why it happened.

As chef.jnstwrt's said, around here Eggland's Best (the most premium $ egg you can buy here) is now priced lower than the supermarket generic brand. Amazing. I use to watch the dates on Eggland's Best as they always seemed near expiration, today at a large supermarket, there was only 3 dozen eggs left. They say they feed their hens premium food and are produced without hormones, antibiotics, or steroids.

This sounds like an issue for the FTC, in my opinion... price fixing.

Well, Jennifer, I don't know the cost of living in Australia, but for 50 cents an egg, I not only would start buying a bunch of chickens, but would start going to Lamaze classes with them!

same thing here in NC, avg. $2.20. The price has suddenly doubled. Fancy cage free eggs are on sale at our local SM for less than two dollars. I'm a chef and I had no idea why thy price has gone through the roof. I have heard the corn theory as well but that is BS. More corn is produced in this country than any other crop and they make the majority of ethanol from non food grade corn.

Your eggs are still cheap. Here in Australia I pay between 5 and $6 a dozen for free range eggs I think the caged hens eggs are probably about $4 a dozen but I would never consider buying them its so cruel to have those hens spend their lives in a cage where they can't turn around and the eggs taste awful you can taste the awful food they feed them

Where do you live? How much did the feed cost for the chickens? Perhaps you can barter the eggs for something else you need or you can freeze them for cakes, omelets, and other dishes. I would not give them over for less than $5 or $6 US a dozen because they are free range home gown eggs.

Up to $4.89 for 18 in Ca. I don't give a dang about range chickens, they have always lived in a chicken pen as long as I can recall. I have shoveled my share of Chicken poop from a chicken house and it went out to the pasture for fertilizer.

I just paid $1.79/dozen at the beginning of this week. This was for extra large eggs, cheaper, obviously, with smaller sizes... I'm in northern indiana.
