You can be born with them - these cause no trouble at all.

You can develop them with a parasitic infection: echinococcus causing "hydatid cysts"

There is a strange and rare genetic disorder: Polycystic liver disease

Mostly liver cysts are benign and don't cause any trouble. They are only really bad if they turn out to be abscesses or strange types of cancer, and not cysts at all ... however these usually do have a slightly different appearance on scanning.

Communicate with your doctor, but do not be surprised if (s)he tells you that there is nothing that needs to be done about the cysts.

As to what is causing the abdominal pain ... still looking?

anything that is found pathologic in the liver needs attention.
whats your history? are you taking lots of meds? alcoholic? are you jaundice?(yellowish color of skin) including eyes?

these are the conditions associated with any live disease.

go to an Intenal medicine doctor not just your GP
