Lets say the car was towed by a private towing company. Does anyone know the process.

The specifics depend on the law in the state where the company is located. For the most part they are sold at auction if they are decent, or sent to the crusher if they aren't. Once final settlement is made, the towing service will attempt to find the last legal or registered owner of the vehicle and collect the amount still owed from them.

Where it gets to be a problem is cars that have been sold, and the new owner neglects to change over the title, sometimes for years, and you suddenly have a high towing and storage bill you are responsible for on a car you thought you sold years before. That's why you should always notify the DMV when you sell a vehicle, and give them the buyers name and address.

The tow company will eventually run the registration on the car and send a letter to the owner. If the owner does not come and claim the car - and pay all of the tow and storage fees then the tow yard can file to get ownership of the vehicle. They usually do this once the tow/storage fees exceed the value of the car. Once they are granted ownership of the car -they dispose of it however they chose. If it's a wrecked car - they usually scrap it.
