Well, I'm not sure about the first local anesthetic .Probably, Novocaine. But, in the old West, whiskey was used to pull teeth or clean a wound then stitch the cut/wound. Chloroform was developed in the mid-1800's and was mainly used as anesthetic. Inhaling Chloroform vapors depresses the central nervous system of a patient, causing dizziness, fatigue and, unconsciousness, allowing a Doc or barber to perform simple surgery or other painful operations.
