Desperately need help here. I have to write a work evaluation on my coworker. He's a good guy but is not exactly a good worker. Does anyone know of any sites I can use that will help me to write a truthful yet somewhat positive work evaluation for him?

Make a list of his positive points (surely he has some) and a list of negatives. Use those lists to write the evaluation. It needs to be honest, but not a total slam. The work problems do need to be said.

Go to your local bookstore (Borders, etc..) and search the management section. Look for books specifically on supervision, performance etc. Sit down with a stack and get an idea of what you'll need to do. I don't recomment buying them UNLESS you have sights on moving up. Then it's worth the expense to know more now.

Spin things positive. Especially because you are a colleague, not a supervisor, these comments will reflect back on you. Even weaknesses can be highlighted as 'potenital', 'adaptable', etc.. without making it sound like you're petty and annoyed at their slacking.

And don't do this with the expectation of privacy - it's very possible the colleague will see your comments, another reason to be diplomatic.

When I worked as an Office Lead I was asked by my Operations Manager to write out an evaluation for my office assistants. It was basically a report stating their performance, recognizing them for a job well done and also what they needed to improve on. It was a hard thing to do because it was a reflection on me on how I was leading. There were no web sites that I found to help me write them. Hope it goes well for you.
