This is something I deal with on a daily basis, and have dealt with in the past with my own Family Members.
I've learned that I let them know I am there for them, ask them if they need anything, sit quietly @ their bedside when they need rest. The little things, ice chips, combed hair, lotion to massage their stiff and sore muscles, just great TLC! Ask them if they are too tired for company, and ask the Nurses' Station to post a sign "No Company Please". I've seen people have NUMEROUS people come visit, and the Patient does not want this- They don't feel well. Make sure turning the pillows to a fresh side- a warm blanket if cold, so many of the little things make a BIG difference.
Sometimes YOU have to take a break- when your loved one is resting well. Walk the halls, watch some TV in a lounge, read, or go home for a while. PRAYING is a good way to make yourself feel better, PLUS, you are guiding your thoughts of wellness to a Higher Power.
If your loved one needs pain medication, make it a POINT that they are NOT forgotten by the Nurses, as they get busy, and don't always get on it right when needed or when it is time. A gentle matter is the BEST way. Show your appreciation to the Staff. It makes them feel good and appreciated- ONLY if they deserve it of course.
Here are a few suggestions. Hope this helped. Good luck and take care!

when you know that there is nothing you can do, it is very heart wrenching...mainly all you can do is just be there for them and stay by their side. and, im sure you are suffering too, especially if it is a family member.sometimes its just a simple thing of getting fresh water, or rub lotion on their feet or just a listening ear. may God be with you.

It is very hard to watch someone you love suffer. You have to just make them as comfortable as you can.Spend as much time with them as you can.Talk to them, listen to them,Be there for them. You will know in your heart that you did ALL you could to help them through this time.Pray for strength to get through this and for the comfort of the loved one.
