What are some things I need to check in order to know if a particular doctor or physical therapy center is a good one? What educational degree does a physical therapist have?

It depends on what type of problem you have. Do you have a herniated disc in the neck or back...if so, I'd recommend going to http://www.mckenziemdt.org. Or do you have more chronic pain issues, if so, I'd look for a place that offers comprehensive pain management. MS? look for a center that specializes in treating those with neurological disorders.

The degree of the PT itself does not matter, I'd look for experience and credentialing. You can get someone who is fresh out of PT school with their DPT (doctorate) who is still trying to figure things out, or you can get someone with their certificate or BS who've been practicing for 20 years and really know their stuff.

Look for post-graduate education if you are looking for someone with a speciality. Someone with an NCS would be go for MS, ALS, Parkinson's, stroke, etc. Someone with their OCS would be good for rotator cuff problems, knee injuries, etc.

You can look for someone by specialty at: http://www.apta.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Find_a_PT&Template=/APTAAPPS/FindAPT/findaptsearch.cfm

The best way is to ask your Doc to refer you to a Hospital PT. I assume you have a health problem, so if you need PT the Doc should arrange it for you.
