"Dharayati iti Dhramah "
Whatever you `embrace` is Dharma.
(sometimes Dharma can be "Religion")
After `embracing` that.....you will be lifted or supported by that Dharma.
It will transform your basic qualities into it`s qualities.
The Dharma is like burning Fire.
Or, like Mother Earth.
"Dharmo rakshati rakshitah"
One who protects the Dharma will be protected by Dharma.

the term "Dharma" is used for religion
but the use of the term dharma in an absolute sense is for morality/principles/righteousness/duty
Say for example it is the dharma of a man to provide as good an upbringing to his children as he can
or it is the dharma of a teacher to do that which is best for his disciples
without following "dharma" you cant be a good person.Dharma is the first and most important step on the path of spirituality. Dharma is to do that always which is the best or right thing to do in terms of morality as against the consideration your own loss or benefit too. The real benefit lies in following dharma
As Mangolia says dharma protects those who protect it
or as they say you reap what you sow
For example The Bible also says-"the wicked will earn deceptive wages but the righteosness of the righteous will come to thier rescue"

Dharma a.k.a. teachings and actions
I add actions because the dharma means nothing unless it is practiced.
