usually you bring a pan of water to a rolling boil, add 1/2 tsp of salt and 1tbsp of vegetable oil
when water is at the boil, break spaghetti in half and put in the water, stir, when the water reaches boil again, reduce heat... usually a #9 or #11 spaghetti needs to cook for 10- 14 minutes depending on your preference... after 9 minutes, taste a piece, if it is too hard cook for an additional 2 minutes, then try again... a vermicelli or angel hair only cooks about four minutes... when it is done pour into a strainer and rinse in hot water....

Here are the basic steps:
1) Fill a large, heavy, deep pan with water and add salt to taste. Put a few drops of olive oil on the top of the water if you like. The oil will help prevent boiling over and also keep the spaghetti from boiling over.
2) Turn the burner on "high" under the pan and bring the water to a full rolling boil.
3) Add the amount of spaghetti you need for the meal you are cooking.
4) Cooking time will vary with the amount of spaghetti and with the thickness of the spaghetti (regular spaghetti vs. thin spaghetti.
5) After four or five minutes, check a strand of spaghetti for doneness. I do so by cooling the strand under cold water and tasting it.
6) When the spaghetti no longer is starchy, but has a bit of toothiness (al dente) left to it, it is done.
7) Drain the spaghetti in a strainer or colander over your sink. If you wish, add butter or olive oil to the hot spaghetti. This will add to the flavor and also keep the strands from sticking to each other.
8) Serve immediately with the desired sauce or with grated cheese, etc.
Good luck!

convey on 2 quarts of salted (would properly be handed over) water to a rapid boil. upload the spaghetti and stir and prepare dinner for approximately 10 minutes. Drain, cool via pouring chilly water over till no longer warm yet heat, upload butter, combination. place on a plate and canopy alongside with your well-known spaghetti sauce.

Do all that boiling, oil and salt stuff. When you think it's done, pull a strand out of the pot and throw it on the wall. If it sticks, it's done.
